BIBA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RENOVATION
YEW WAH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
OF BEIJING
Beijing Yew Wah International School is a large-scale international education campus developed by the Baohua Life Education Group along the Liangshui River in Beijing's Yizhuang Development Zone. It comprises Yew Chung International School, which enrols children of expatriates in China, and Yew Wah International School, which enrols children of Chinese nationals. The scope of this project encompassed three buildings: the Yew Wah Academic Building, the Yew Chung Gymnasium, and the Yew Wah Gymnasium. When our design team became involved, the main structure of the Yew Wah Academic Building had already been completed. However, the school's operational team deemed its interior spaces inadequate for meeting the requirements of ‘21st-century learning’. Consequently, we undertook a comprehensive redesign and reconfiguration of the interior layout upon the existing structure.

In spatial design, we prioritise a sense of security and belonging, striving to create a learning environment as comfortable as home for children. We employ natural, cheerful colour palettes and soft, inviting materials, while avoiding excessive scale that could create a sense of oppression. Flexible partitioning solutions—including glass screens, sliding doors, folding panels, and lift-up doors—separate classrooms from communal areas. This approach maintains visual openness and spatial continuity while fostering an inviting, comfortable, and engaging atmosphere throughout shared spaces. We have moved beyond the conventional notion of “corridors”, transforming every nook and cranny into functional zones for learning and interaction. This approach enhances the sense of belonging and maximises the utility of every space.
In terms of functional layout, subject-specific classrooms are evenly distributed and interconnected, fostering an interdisciplinary learning environment. The ground floor centrally houses spaces such as an art workshop, gallery, dance studio, multi-purpose hall, and recording studio. Exhibition surfaces are maximised through flexible installations including suspended ceiling hooks, wall-mounted picture rails, writable coatings, and pin-tackable felt, accommodating diverse display and teaching requirements. The multi-purpose theatre, converted from the original building's indoor gymnasium, seats 200. Its gently curved walls and ceiling create a Broadway-inspired artistic atmosphere. Electric retractable seating affords exceptional flexibility, enabling seamless adaptation for gatherings and performances of varying scales to accommodate diverse requirements.
The interior design of YC Sports Centre employs three distinct colour schemes: “Fresh Air” tones envelop the communal areas, “Ocean Blue” evokes white sands, azure skies and an oasis for the swimming pool, while “Urban Green” transforms the indoor basketball court into a welcoming activity space. The design first connects the previously fragmented main and secondary lobbies, forming a continuous, rich public space. This provides diverse rest areas and furnishings, alongside sanitary facilities serving both the gymnasium and adjacent outdoor playground. The swimming complex features eight lanes and a dedicated infant pool. The gymnasium houses two standard courts, equipped with stadium-specific partition screens that divide the space into relatively private zones, facilitating simultaneous physical education classes for four classes.
The Yew Wah Gymnasium at Yew Wah International School Beijing comprises a student dining hall on the ground floor and a multi-purpose basketball court on the upper level. The dining area employs an appetite-stimulating palette of warm hues including orange, maroon and wood tones, whilst the basketball court features a colour scheme termed “Honest Orange”. The orange and blue tones of the Yew Wah emblem appear on the interior walls as perforated acoustic panels, showcasing the home court identity of Yew Wah Secondary School. The backdrop comprises perforated timber panelling and a light grey vinyl finish backed with 60mm impact-resistant foam.
