BIBA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RENOVATION

BRITISH SCHOOL OF BEIJING

SANLITUN CAMPUS

The British School of Beijing, Sanlitun Campus, commissioned a design team to transform a newly leased building into a learning space for first-grade students, connecting it to the existing preschool classroom building. Adhering to a student-centered design philosophy, the project transformed the originally narrow and dark building into an open, transparent, bright, and interactive learning space that is highly integrated with the students' learning needs.

The design team added a two-story "Four Seasons Garden," or WOW Space, with a glass ceiling at the center of the original U-shaped building. This core interior space gives the originally linear space a sense of cohesion and interactive connection. The sun-drenched Four Seasons Garden is the perfect place for children to play, gather, or have group classes.

The interior design continues the simple decorative style and refreshing blue-green color scheme typical of British international schools. Wooden latticework was introduced into the originally narrow corridors, combined with niches for display, to enhance the space's intimacy and warmth. Due to the limited space, each pair of classrooms facing each other is equipped with a movable folding door. During daily teaching, the folding doors are opened as much as possible to eliminate corridors and create a spacious and integrated learning space, providing a diverse environment for lectures, discussions, demonstrations, group learning, and performances.
