In response to the challenges facing contemporary higher education, we have replaced traditional “mechanical thinking” with a “natural ecological mindset”. We have seamlessly integrated the existing water systems of the site into an open, pedestrian-friendly spatial framework, creating an organic layout characteristic of Jingchu architecture that borrows from the natural landscape. This achieves a spatial aesthetic described as “nestled against mountains, encircled by water, and shielded by screens”. The architecture adopts a ‘courtyard-enclosed dwelling’ layout, employing deep eaves and elevated ground floors to facilitate natural ventilation and shading. Waterfront structures cantilever gracefully over the water, harnessing the body of water to modulate microclimates while fostering a poetic, intimate connection with the water. These designs not only respond to Wuhan's climatic characteristics but also allow staff and students to experience nature's rhythms through the changing seasons.
We have ingeniously lowered the main urban thoroughfare dividing the campus, preserving its integrity while achieving an organic connection with the surrounding community. Through mixed-use development, we have interwoven teaching, practical training, and living spaces; by increasing the proportion of on-campus accommodation and promoting mixed-use apartment models, we have fostered a campus community characterised by proximity. Facilities such as the library and sports hall are open to the public, transforming the campus into a regional “cultural resource centre” where knowledge thrives through exchange and sharing.
