BIBA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RENOVATION
CHANG’AN No. 4 MIDDLE SCHOOL
Chang'an No. 4 Middle School is located in Chang'an District, Xi'an. Chang'an is the ancient name for Xi'an, representing the city's most glorious era. The urban planning layout of the ancient city of Chang'an, with its various "fang" (neighborhoods) of different sizes and layouts, inspired the design team: a highly open, transparent, and flexible learning space for the 21st century, where personalized learning and group collaboration complement each other.

The design team adopted the urban planning strategy of "fang" (neighborhood) to plan the general classrooms, specialized classrooms, venues, offices and various auxiliary spaces in the teaching building layer by layer, creating different types of "fang" spaces to facilitate students to gather and communicate, and to bring students a sense of security, identity and belonging. The original building was connected by a semi-open, corridor-style complex, linking three teaching buildings, an auditorium, a restaurant, a gymnasium, and a library, among other shared facilities. The classrooms, public spaces, and exhibition and performance spaces within the complex formed the most vibrant areas on campus, all linked together to create a pleasant walking path and fostering a relaxed atmosphere for interaction.
The interior design continues the original building's exterior walls with exposed concrete and raw wood materials, creating a natural and organic spatial atmosphere that connects the interior and exterior. Bright colors are used to accent the interior and exterior spaces, making each "room" more distinctive.
